The Jr. Kings went 3-0 to win the California Amateur Hockey Association Tier 1 Championship on February 8, 2013. Two of the 3 games had to go to overtime in order to be settled with the Jr Kings winning both. The first overtime win was against the Wildcats. The both teams were tied after the over time so the focus changed to a shutout. Both teams had outstanding goalie play which resulted in a 12 round shoot-out. The final was a matchup of two teams that know each other pretty well, the Jr Ducks. Again the Jr Kings trailed 1-0 late into the 3rd. The Jr Kings started to gain momentum in the 3rd period. After a few near misses they final got one past the Jr Ducks goalie with 2:43 left into the game. The momentum carried over into OT. The Jr Kings caught the Jr Ducks in a line change which created an odd man rush. After some tic tac toe passing the Jr Kings were able to finish by roofing a shot with only 20.3 sec left in a 1-1 tie.
The Jr Kings PW AAA 2000's played in the LA Super Series of the New Year's Holiday. They opened up the tournament on Saturday against the Colorado Thunderbirds. The Kings were up 3-0 before giving up 2 late goals but they held on to win. However, in the second games against the Canadian Jets they weren't as fortunate as they again scored 2 goals early only to surrender 4 unanswered goals (1 empty net). On day two the Kings played DYHA (Arizona). This time they scored early but was able to close it out 3-0. In the afternoon game it was a rematch with the Sharks who beat the Kings only a few weeks ago for the Kings only lost in CAHA. The Sharks jumped out to a 1-0 lead only 20 seconds into the game. The Kings responded with 6 unanswered goals and the game ended 8-2.
The Kings took the 2nd seed in the purple division behind the Canadian Jets. They matched up in the Semi-finals against a team they know very well, the Jr Ducks. The Kings won all 3 CAHA meetings this year. This game was all Kings, they went up 5-0 before giving up two late goals. This win put the Jr Kings into the finals vs the Canadian Jets, who they lost to in the previous meeting 4-2.
In the Championship game the kings jumped out early again on a well earned penalty shot by Nick Castro in the middle of the 1st. Early in the 2nd period Tanner Ensign scored to give the Kings a 2-0 lead. The Jets didn't give up in fact they continued to attack which created two 5 on 3 penalty kills for the Kings. The Jets scored on the first one to close the gap to 2-1. The Kings were able to re-group and kill off the second 5-3. Then in the third period Ensign scored again making the score 3-1. Then in the final seconds Ensign capped it of with the empty net goal.
This Kings got contributions from everyone on the roster to win this tournament.
The 2013 Quebec International Tournament schedule is now out and in a ironic twist our first game is against the New Jersey Devils in a Stanley Cup rematch. The 2nd game will be against either Detroit's Compuware or Nickel City Sons.
